Director's noteSet at the height of the British Empire in the late 19th century, this story unfolds in a world shaped by the conviction that one culture has the right to rule another. The British Raj in India was not merely a political enterprise but an ideological machine extracting wealth while exporting a narrative of “civilization” to justify its reach. Against this backdrop, two discharged soldiers—products of that same imperial system—set out to replicate its logic on their own terms. Their journey is not an escape from empire, but an extension of it— a private venture built on the same assumptions of superiority, entitlement, and myth.
Yet the lands they enter are inhabited by people with their own histories, beliefs, and structures of meaning—worlds that resist being reduced to conquest narratives. As the story unfolds, we witness the collision between imperial ambition and deeply rooted cultural identity. The allure of gold and power becomes inseparable from the danger of misunderstanding and erasure. What begins as adventure reveals itself as a cautionary tale about the human cost of imposing one’s story onto another people.
Though rooted in the 19th century, the dynamics at play remain strikingly familiar. Imperialism has not vanished; it has evolved. Today, the belief that power grants the right to define or “improve” others still echoes. This musical invites us to look beyond the romance of exploration and ask harder questions: Who gets to write history? Whose stories are elevated, and whose are erased? And what does it mean, now as then, to claim a kingdom that was never ours to take?
Thank you for supporting live theatre!
